The Institute of Psychiatry was opened in 1923 and is a institute of the University of London and, since August 1997, a school of King's College London.
The origins of the Institute date back to 1896 but it was not until 1914 that the London County Council agreed to establish the hospital in Denmark Hill with the assistance of a generous donation from Dr Henry Maudsley after whom it is named.
Since 1999, the Institute of Psychiatry is the largest academic community in Europe devoted to the study and prevention of mental health problems. The Institute aims at establishing the best care for people who suffer from mental health problems, by pursuing excellence in research, development and teaching.
In the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise the highest possible rating was awarded to the Institute in recognition of the international quality of our research.
